Sliding, guillotine or folding balcony glazing: which to choose

Our catalogue has three types of systems for balconies and terraces: sliding, guillotine and folding. Below is a comparison based on the published specs of Kanaat and Asash systems: how each opens, maximum size, glass, and where each one fits. Price depends on the size and is calculated after a free on-site measurement.

Sliding — tall openings, simple operation

Panels run on bottom rollers along 2–5 tracks. The Kanaat sliding system comes with or without a threshold, and exposed aluminium parts are polyamide-coated so they do not corrode. Kanaat Lux has 1.5 m panels and supports corner openings; Eco is the cost-effective double-glazed option. The aluminium Asash RS70 is 70 mm deep with 2, 3 or 4 tracks, and the thermally broken Asash RST116 is a lift-and-slide system for villas and panoramic terraces. Because panels park behind each other, part of the opening stays covered by the stacked panels when open.

Guillotine — a terrace that turns into a railing

The Kanaat guillotine has three sections: the bottom one is fixed and the other two move vertically by remote control. When open, the structure works as a railing. Height and sash width reach 3000–3500 mm, with a 4x12x4 tempered glass unit, Forza series aluminium profiles and any profile colour. Automation: Somfy remote and Mosen motor.

Folding — open the balcony as much as possible

In folding systems, 650 mm panels fold and stack to the side, opening the balcony almost completely. Kanaat Gold: 10 mm tempered glass, up to 2300 mm high, child lock and drainage. Kanaat Bella (patent 2017/0163): up to 2800 mm, silent rollers and auto-locking. The insulated option is the 24 mm double-glazed folding system, up to 2600 mm, with a self-draining profile channel.

How to choose

Want to open the balcony fully — folding. Tall or wide opening, panoramic view or an opening corner — sliding (especially Kanaat Lux). Terrace or restaurant, remote control and a railing when open — guillotine. Need it warm in winter — double-glazed options (Kanaat Lux and Eco, 24 mm folding) or the thermally broken Asash RST116.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better for a balcony: sliding, guillotine or folding glazing?

It depends on the goal. Folding opens the balcony almost completely; sliding suits tall and wide openings (up to 3500 mm, panels up to 1400 mm) and corner openings; the guillotine is remote-controlled and works as a railing when open — good for terraces and restaurants. We match the system to your opening during a free measurement.

Which system opens the balcony fully?

Folding: the panels fold and stack to one side. With sliding glazing the panels park behind each other, so part of the opening stays covered. With a guillotine the moving sections travel vertically and the fixed bottom section serves as a railing.

Which balcony glazing is suitable for winter?

Double-glazed systems: the Kanaat Lux (4+20+4 or 6+16+6) and Kanaat Eco (4+12+4) sliding systems, the 24 mm double-glazed folding system and the guillotine with a 4x12x4 unit. The best insulation is the thermally broken Asash RST116, 116 mm deep.

What is the maximum height of balcony glazing?

Per the catalogue specs: Kanaat sliding — 3100 mm, Kanaat Eco — 3000 mm, Kanaat Lux — 3500 mm; guillotine — 3000–3500 mm; Kanaat Gold folding — 2300 mm, double-glazed folding — 2600 mm, Kanaat Bella — 2800 mm.
